Cat Cephalexin Calculator Guide
Cephalexin (often sold as Keflex or Rilexine) is a cephalosporin antibiotic used in veterinary medicine to treat bacterial infections in cats. Common uses include treating skin infections (pyoderma), urinary tract infections (UTIs), bone infections, and respiratory issues.
How the Dosage is Calculated
The total amount of medication a cat receives depends directly on its body weight and the prescribed concentration (mg/kg). The standard formula is:
\(Total\ Dose_{mg} = Weight_{kg} \times Dose_{mg/kg}\)
For example, a 5 kg cat prescribed 22 mg/kg will receive:
\(5 \times 22 = 110 \text{ mg per dose}\)
However, a smaller 2 kg cat with the same prescription (22 mg/kg) will only receive:
\(2 \times 22 = 44 \text{ mg per dose}\)
Safety and Intensity
The "Dose Intensity" or safety level is determined by the mg/kg ratio, not the total milligrams. A high mg/kg ratio increases the risk of side effects regardless of the cat's size. Standard dosages range from 10 to 30 mg/kg. Dosages above 35 mg/kg should be verified by a veterinarian to prevent toxicity.
Liquid Suspensions vs. Tablets
Liquid: Calculated by dividing the total required milligrams by the concentration of the liquid (often 250mg per 5mL teaspoon).
\(Volume_{mL} = \frac{Total\ Dose_{mg}}{Concentration_{mg/mL}}\)
Tablets: Since pills cannot always be split perfectly, the calculator rounds the dosage to the nearest practical fraction (quarter, half, or whole tablet) to ensure the cat receives an adequate dose without significant overdosage.
