Unlike many mammals, the actual embryonic development in most bear species is relatively short (around 6-10 weeks). However, the period between mating and cubbing can be much longer because the fertilized egg (blastocyst) floats freely in the uterus for several months before implanting in the uterine wall. This adaptation ensures the cub's birth coincides with the female entering her winter denning period.
