Dog BMI Calculator: Check Your Dog’s Weight Status
Dog BMI Calculator
This calculator estimates a dog’s Body Mass Index (BMI) using weight and height at the withers. It also classifies the result into a simple weight-status category and estimates a healthy weight range for the same height.
How the calculation works
The calculator converts your inputs to metric units and applies the standard BMI equation:
\( \mathrm{BMI} = \frac{W}{H^2} \)
Where \(W\) is weight in kilograms and \(H\) is height in meters (measured at the withers).
Weight status classification
The BMI value is compared to reference ranges to provide an easy screening classification (underweight, healthy, overweight, obese). Because dogs vary widely by breed and body composition, you should treat this as a practical estimate and not a diagnosis.
Estimated healthy weight range
For the same height, a reference “healthy BMI range” can be translated into an estimated healthy weight interval:
\[ W_{\min}=\mathrm{BMI}_{\min}\cdot H^2,\quad W_{\max}=\mathrm{BMI}_{\max}\cdot H^2 \]
If your current weight is outside this range, the calculator shows an estimated recommended change in kilograms. Safe changes should be gradual, and a veterinarian can help set an appropriate plan.
Measurement tips
- Weight - Use a scale whenever possible.
- Height at withers - Measure from the floor to the top of the shoulder blades while your dog is standing naturally.
Important note
This tool is for screening and education. If you are concerned about your dog’s weight, energy level, or mobility, consult a veterinarian for a full assessment and a safe nutrition/exercise plan.
